Spain, tourist season knows no bounds - It welcomed 11 million visitors in July. High influx expected in September as well
Spain is once again breaking records in the tourism sector. The latest data from the National Institute of Statistics shows that the country received 11 million international visitors in July, the highest monthly number in its history. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, Spain welcomed 55.5 million visitors.
Tourist spending is growing at the same pace, surpassing 76 billion euros so far this year, an increase of 7.2% compared to 2024. Spain's dominance as a favorite holiday destination remains intact, thanks mainly to British, French and German tourists.
The huge tourism boom has extended the holiday season, which traditionally falls quiet after August. Trends have changed significantly, with less than 40% of Spaniards going on holiday in August. On the other hand, around one in six Spaniards plan to go in September, according to the National Observatory of Tourism Abroad in Spain.
International visitors are following the same trends, filling beaches, bars and hotels even after the summer season is over. In the Canary Islands, a key Spanish tourism destination, hotel and apartment prices rose by 5.3% between September 2023 and 2024. Accommodation costs are currently 25% higher than in 2019. Nationwide, a one-night stay last September cost an average of 132 euros, 21% more than in 2023.
But record successes do not come without challenges. Protests against tourists and environmental concerns are on the rise. In the Canary Islands, demonstrators have taken to the streets to draw attention to housing problems and the environmental damage caused by mass tourism. Protesters are demanding limits on the number of visitors as the region prepares for another record autumn season. Some cities, such as Barcelona, have also tightened controls on the Airbnb platform and are reorganizing the way tourists visit major attractions.
