Spain, plan against heat waves - Public buildings will be used as climate shelters during the summer

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced a plan to create a network of climate shelters. Many state buildings will be made available to citizens from next summer to protect them from increasingly severe heat waves.
The network will build on existing initiatives already operating in the Basque Autonomous Region and Catalonia. “Devastating droughts and heat waves are no longer rare,” Sanchez said at a climate conference in Madrid, noting that some summers no longer consist of separate waves, but of one long heat wave lasting from June to August.
“Before next summer, we will create a national network of climate shelters, using government buildings, especially those of the central administration, making them accessible to everyone,” he added. The Prime Minister announced that the government will also provide funds for the creation of shelters in the neighborhoods that need it most, where the heat affects citizens the most.
The network is one of 80 concrete measures announced by Sanchez at the conference, drawn up after around 4,000 proposals submitted by citizens, environmentalists and scientists. The program includes protecting coastal and marine systems, investing in coping with floods and fires in rural areas, and combating disinformation on climate change.
Sanchez stressed that 88% of the population considers climate change a serious problem that requires action. He also criticized the EU's decision to relax a planned ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2035, calling it a "historic mistake."
Climate change, caused largely by the burning of fossil fuels, is already increasing its impact on the planet and making life more difficult in many regions, including Europe, where heatwaves, fires and droughts are becoming longer and more intense.
