Spain, "climate pact" to fight fires - Prime Minister Sanchez promises massive mobilization in affected regions
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised a "national pact" to tackle the climate emergency as he visited a western region battling wildfires.
Spain is entering its third week of heatwave warnings, with firefighters continuing to battle blazes in the northwest and west of the country. Army units have also been deployed to help contain the fires. Meanwhile, France and Italy have contributed water planes to an air base near Salamanca.
"The Spanish government will work now so that in September we have the foundations of this national pact to mitigate the climate emergency," Prime Minister Sanchez said during a visit to Ourense, in the northwestern province of Galicia. He added that he wants to do "everything possible and more" to ensure that the victims of the fires return to normality.
The northwestern and western parts of the country have been hit hard by the blazes, especially the regions of Castile and Leon, Galicia, Asturias and Extremadura. The battle to put out the fires across southern Europe during one of the most intense summers on record was made even more difficult as temperatures were expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius in some areas, Spain's national weather agency, AEMET, said.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said 500 more members of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit would join the 1,400 already on the ground to fight the fires. The head of state added that this could be the EU's largest civil security mission in history.
Spain is expected to remain under heatwave alert until Monday, with extreme temperatures significantly increasing the risk of forest fires. Human-caused climate change is increasing the intensity, duration and frequency of extreme heat spells, which fuel and spread the flames.
