Revolution in Norway - 95.9% of new vehicles in 2025 were electric

According to official figures, almost all new cars registered in Norway last year were fully electric. The Scandinavian country is consolidating its global lead in phasing out gasoline and diesel vehicles.

The Norwegian oil producer's rapid shift to battery-powered vehicles contrasts with the rest of Europe, where low demand for electric vehicles prompted the European Union last month to cancel a planned ban on internal combustion engine cars by 2035.

Due to tax incentives, 95.9% of all new cars registered in Norway in 2025 were electric, with the figure standing at almost 98% in December. The annual rate increased from 88.9% in 2024, according to data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV).

A record number of 179,549 new cars were registered in Norway during the year, a 40% increase from 2024. Tesla was the best-selling car brand in Norway for the fifth consecutive year, with a market share of 19.1%, followed by Volkswagen with 13.3% of registrations and Volvo with 7.8%.

Chinese-made cars will have a 13.7% market share in Norway in 2025, up from 10.4% a year earlier, led by BYD.

While some incentives for electric vehicles have been withdrawn, the government has steadily increased tariffs on petrol and diesel cars to make them more expensive. The few fossil fuel cars registered in 2025 were mainly specialist vehicles, such as wheelchair-accessible vehicles or those used by police and other emergency services, along with some hybrid models and sports cars.

Electric vehicles costing less than 300,000 Norwegian kroner ($29,831.75) will continue to be exempt from VAT in 2026, in a potential boost for small cars, officials said.
