In France, choose the train over the plane - Rail transport, up to 2 times faster than intercity flights
Traveling by train is faster than flying for short trips within France, according to a new analysis.
In 2023, France imposed a ban on short-haul domestic flights when there is a rail alternative of less than two and a half hours. The decision was intended to curb carbon emissions, but replacing a plane with a train can also be a cheaper and, often, faster option.
Research by Trainline compared five national journeys for which the air option is expected to disappear soon and found that some of them are completed twice as quickly by choosing rail transport.
Taking the train instead of the plane for trips of 2.5 hours or less in France can mean a significant reduction in travel time.
The rail booking company used its own data to calculate the duration and cost of the train journey, as well as data from airline booking site Skyscanner.
The difference in travel time comes mainly because choosing rail transport means avoiding long security checks and waiting times before the flight.
"While flight duration often looks favorable, it does not reflect the actual duration of an air journey, including the journey to the airport, the wait before boarding and security checks, potential delays associated with checks and check-in," Trainline explained.
The research found that some intercity trips in France can be almost twice as fast by train as by plane.
The distance from Rennes to Paris takes 3 hours and 21 minutes by plane, but only 1 hour and 44 minutes by train, while Paris-Lyon takes 3 hours and 37 minutes when flying and 2 hours and 11 minutes by rail.
Traveling by train can also shorten travel times, because passengers are more likely to depart and arrive in the city center, while many airports require an additional transfer.
Trainline figures also showed that the cost of rail travel can be much lower than air travel. Flying is, on average, 1.8 times more expensive than the train. Travelling from Paris to Lyon by train can save you up to €40, while from Marseille to Lyon by train reduces costs by €41.
The Trainline study also found that carbon emissions from rail transport can be 124 to 151 times lower than those from aircraft.
For example, the company calculated that a flight from Paris to Lyon produces more than 90 kg of CO2 per person, while the same train journey emits only 0.690 kg.
