British Prime Minister optimistic about economic cooperation - President

In a bilateral meeting in Beijing, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on state-to-state relations, promising greater cooperation in trade, investment and technology.

While the EU remains alarmed by American geopolitics, Starmer called on China for a "more sophisticated relationship" for European states.

After the first visit by a British state in eight years, Starmer agreed to 30-day visa-free entry for Britons, discussed lower tariffs on alcohol products and a $15 billion investment by vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca in China.

Labour Prime Minister Starmer has struggled to deliver on the economic growth he promised, now choosing to also improve relations with China. “China is a major player on the global stage and it is vital that we build a more sophisticated relationship where we can identify opportunities to collaborate,” Starmer said during the meeting.

This has been followed by harsh criticism from some British and American politicians, who accuse China of espionage on an industrial scale and human rights abuses.

President Jinping said China was ready to develop a long-term partnership with Britain after "twists and turns" in the relationship that did not serve either country's interests. "We can achieve a result that will stand the test of time," Jinping said.

Starmer, who was accompanied by more than 50 business leaders, said the relationship with China was now stronger, also praising President Jinping as a person to 'do business with'.
