Italy recovers Etruscan artifacts worth 8 million euros intended for the black market! (PHOTOS)
Italian authorities have announced the seizure of an illegal excavation of an Etruscan burial in the central region of Umbria and are investigating two people for allegedly stealing 8 million euros worth of urns, sarcophagi and other artefacts destined for sale on the black market.
The illegal dig was adjacent to another Etruscan burial site discovered by a farmer working his land in 2015, authorities said.
Using a drone for aerial photography and phone tapping, they found the second site on land owned by a local businessman who had access to earth-moving equipment.
At the new site they found two sarcophagi, believed to be of two Etruscan princesses, one still with the skeleton inside, and a burial pan complete with urns with battle and hunting scenes, perfume jars and a bone comb.
The Etruscan civilization existed from 900 BC to 27 BC in central Italy mainly between the Tiber and Arno rivers, covering parts of present-day Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.
