Electric car industry calls on EU to implement zero emissions target by 2035

More than 150 leaders of the electric car industry in Europe have signed a joint letter, urging the European Union to stick to its zero-emissions target for cars and vans by 2035.

The signatories, including companies such as Volvo Cars and Polestar, warned that any delay or relaxation of these targets would harm the European electric car market, give an advantage to global competitors and damage investor confidence.

This letter follows another sent in late August by associations of vehicle manufacturers and suppliers in Europe to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, stressing that a 100% reduction in emissions for cars by 2035 was no longer feasible. Among its signatories was Mercedes-Benz.

On September 12, von der Leyen will discuss the future of the automotive sector with industry representatives, at a time when the sector faces increased competition from Chinese manufacturers and new tariffs from the US.

According to Polestar officials, weakening the targets would send a signal that the EU could back out of its commitments. "This would not only harm the business climate, but also Europe's ability to compete," they said.

Meanwhile, a CEO of electric vehicle charging company Fastned said the clarity provided by the 2035 target has enabled significant investments in charging infrastructure and software development. "Those investments can only bring profits if we achieve this target," he added.

According to a report published by the Transport & Environment (T&E) organization, all European car manufacturers, except Mercedes-Benz, are on track to meet emissions targets for the period 2025-2027. Mercedes will have to merge its emissions with those of Volvo Cars and Polestar to avoid fines.
