Greece, weather conditions "sink" energy prices - Producers pay for

For the fifth consecutive day, power producers in Greece have paid to supply the electricity grid during certain hours of the day. The main beneficiaries of this situation are suppliers and large industries.

These unusual circumstances have resulted from a combination of hot sun, strong winds and low energy demand at the height of the holiday season. Last weekend, the negative payment lasted for eight hours each day, with the price of a megawatt-hour (MWh) falling to -12.92 euros.

On the contrary, suppliers and heavy industries are being paid to buy and consume energy. While renewable energy producers do not have predetermined prices and have suffered a significant decline in revenues.

Most households and small and medium-sized enterprises that do not have smart meters will not benefit immediately from this situation, but will see an average price reduction per MWh of about 50%. The savings that consumers will feel will depend on the willingness of producers to share a portion of the profits.

Renewable energy sources have contributed 60% to 66% of the total electricity supply and the average price per MWh has moved from 53 euros on Sunday to 74 euros on Tuesday.

However, a large portion of renewable energy is being wasted, as storage projects have not yet been implemented and are encountering obstacles.

So far this year, 352 GWh of electricity from renewable sources have been wasted, or 12.3% of total production.
