"Immigration remains an opportunity for Europe" - Spanish Minister: Data reflects positive contribution

"Immigration remains an opportunity for Europe" - Spanish Minister:

Spain's Economy Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, stated that immigration remains an economic opportunity for the European Union, even though the debate around it is often manipulated by "false narratives" that distance public perception from reality.

Asked if the debate on immigration has a racist tone, he said that in some cases it does, and that this should be combated through the presentation of data, not political slogans. Spain is one of the fastest-growing economies in the eurozone, with an expected expansion of 2.9% this year, almost triple the growth of Germany, France and Italy combined.

“When you look at Spain, our experience with immigration has been positive,” Cuerpo said. “The data, whether in absolute terms or per capita, shows that they contribute positively to the Spanish economy.”

Bank of Spain research, published earlier this year, suggested that the foreign-born population working in Spain had contributed between 0.4 and 0.7 percentage points to gross domestic product per capita, averaging 2.9% between 2022 and 2024.

Immigration has become a complicated issue for the EU, which is grappling with an aging population and labor shortages, but is also facing political opposition from groups seeking tougher rules to combat illegal immigration.

Conservative and far-right parties are also calling for faster deportations for those who do not have the legal right to stay in the EU and stricter monitoring of asylum and family reunification applications.

Earlier this week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Europeans alone should “decide who comes to Europe and crosses our borders, and under what circumstances.” She also stressed that the EU will introduce a new sanctions mechanism for human traffickers.

EU interior ministers agreed this week on a sweeping reform of immigration rules that could create return centers for migrants in countries outside the bloc.
