Trump limits AI laws - Signs law that "curbs" state technology regulations

United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order on artificial intelligence, which aims to prevent the proliferation of different state laws on this technology by setting a national standard.
"We want to have a single central source of approval," Trump told reporters, accompanied by his top advisers, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The order will give the Trump administration the tools “to challenge more stringent state regulations,” said White House artificial intelligence adviser David Sacks. He added that the administration will not challenge rules related to child safety around technology.
Leading artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI, Google, Meta Platforms and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, have stated that the federal government should regulate the industry, not the states.
However, state leaders from both political parties have expressed the need to set clear limits on artificial intelligence, especially after Congress has repeatedly failed to pass laws for the technology industry.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed an “AI Bill of Rights” that includes data privacy, parental controls and consumer protections. California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose state is home to some of the largest tech companies, passed a law this year requiring major developers to explain their plans to mitigate potentially catastrophic risks.
Other states have passed laws banning sexual images created with artificial intelligence without consent, as well as fake political videos generated by the new technology.
