Britain strengthens military capabilities - 1.5 billion pounds to build six weapons factories
The United Kingdom will spend £1.5 billion on building six munitions and energy factories, aiming to "deter adversaries".
The defence secretary, John Healey, said the funds were part of plans for an "always-on" weapons pipeline and would support the procurement of up to 7,000 long-range weapons manufactured in the UK.
The 130-page strategic defence review will set out the threats facing Britain, including the "immediate and urgent" risk posed by Russia. The draft will be published by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and will draw largely on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
“The hard-won lessons of Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine show that a military is only as strong as the industry behind it. We are strengthening the UK’s industrial base to better deter our adversaries and make the country secure at home and strong abroad,” Healey said.
He stressed that the UK's defence industry would become "an engine for economic growth" and boost jobs. The new £1.5bn funding will take Britain's munitions spending to £6bn and support 1,800 jobs, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Ministers have also announced more than £1.5 billion to improve the condition of military housing by carrying out urgent repairs, such as fixing boilers and roofs, and treating damp.
The review is not expected to set out new commitments for defence spending, but will instead reiterate a commitment made by Starmer in February to increase the defence budget to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 and to 3% in the next term.
