Britain, highest unemployment in 4 years - ONS: Number of employees on payrolls

The number of people employed in the UK has fallen, particularly in shops, restaurants, bars and hotels, reflecting a decline in employment, while wages in the private sector grew at the slowest pace in five years.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the number of employees on the payroll fell by 43,000 in December from the previous month - the biggest monthly fall since November 2020.

The unemployment rate remained at a four-year high of 5.1% in the three months to the end of November, but that was up from 4.4% a year earlier. The one-month rate in November rose to 5.4% from 5.1% in October, the highest combined in more than five years.

The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has been criticised for creating uncertainty for employers by announcing £26bn of tax-raising measures in a bid to reduce the cost of living and cover a deficit in the public finances.

The Chancellor is thought to be finalising a support package that will include cuts to business rates for pubs, which risk facing an average increase of 76% over the next three years.

Growth in regular private income, a key indicator for the Bank of England, fell to 3.6% in the three months to November.

In November, 155,000 working days were lost due to industrial disputes across Britain, with more than half of them lost in the health and social work sector due to strikes by resident doctors in England.

The labor market has weakened significantly over the past year. Unemployment reached 1.8 million and the number of job vacancies has fallen below the pre-pandemic average.
