EU, jobs in the solar industry decrease - Employment shrinks for the first time

Employment in the European Union's solar industry reached a record high last year, but is set to decline in 2025. However, the contraction in solar jobs this year may only be temporary, according to the latest report from SolarPower Europe.

The expansion of green jobs in Europe continued in 2024, with the EU solar sector reaching a record 865,000 jobs. The sector's 5% growth outpaced that of just 0.8% of the bloc's overall job market, according to the report.

About 86% of jobs are provided by the solar panel installation sector. Employment in the solar industry will face a temporary decline of 5% in 2025, reaching 825,000 jobs, due to slower installations and manufacturing challenges.

However, the report expects the solar sector workforce to expand over the coming years and reach 916,000 jobs by 2029.

“For the first time in a decade, job growth in the solar sector has stalled. We cannot ignore this warning signal. EU leaders have the opportunity to stabilize the market, support European solar panel manufacturers and strengthen the skills development strategy,” stated official sources from SolarPower Europe.

The main reason for the decline this year is the slowdown in the residential solar sector. The share of the workforce in the rooftop solar sector has fallen over the past three years, from 73% in 2022 to 59% last year, and is expected to fall to 56% by 2029, according to the report.

Germany remained the top employer in 2024, with around 128,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs. However, this level fell from 154,000 positions recorded in 2023, despite the expansion of new installations.

Spain ranked second with 122,000 full-time jobs. While Italy saw significant growth, ranking third in the EU, with the solar sector job market exceeding 100,000 workers.
