"EU, more gas from the US" - Energy Commissioner announces plans to

The European Union will seek more gas from other countries, including the United States, to replace Russian supplies. The bloc also wants to expand renewable energy faster to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the EU's energy commissioner has said.

The union has pledged to phase out Russian fossil fuels by 2027 in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. While Russian gas supplies have declined, the EU increased its imports of Russian liquefied natural gas last year.

"Instead of using citizens' money to pay for Moscow's war, we should make sure we produce our own energy," said EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen.

He stressed that Brussels was preparing changes to speed up the construction of renewable plants. For industries and home heating, where gas cannot be quickly replaced by electricity, he said the EU would step up efforts to get alternative supplies. "My job is to make sure it's cheap and not Russian. That could also mean more imports from the US," Jorgensen added.

European benchmark gas prices rose to their highest levels in two years last week. US President Donald Trump warned before taking office in January that the EU would face trade tariffs if it did not import more oil and gas from the United States.

The European Commission does not buy gas directly, but has drawn up plans to engage with suppliers in a bid to secure more long-term contracts at stable prices. Under EU law, European gas contracts must end by 2049 to meet the bloc's climate change target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

EU electricity market rules mean that, despite the rapid expansion of renewables, gas fluctuations continue to dictate the price of energy that many European consumers pay.
