German aviation, in "free fall" - Airlines leave due to high costs

Airlines are withdrawing their planes from Germany due to huge cost increases imposed by the state, the German Aviation Association said, warning of significant economic consequences.

The number of aircraft stationed in Germany has fallen from 190 in 2019 to just 130 this year, which has led to the loss of 10,000 jobs and 4 billion euros in additional damage per year.

"Since 2019, the costs imposed by the state have more than doubled, and airlines are increasingly avoiding Germany," declared the head of the Aviation Association, calling on the government to prioritize the recovery of the sector after the pandemic.

The industry has criticized the German government's decision to postpone a planned aviation tax cut, arguing that canceling the increase in this tax in May 2024 would have sent a supportive signal to air carriers.

According to the Association, state fees, including taxes, air traffic control fees and security fees, are expected to increase by 1.1 billion euros, reaching 4.4 billion euros this year.

Passenger numbers grew by just 3% in the first half of the year, reaching 99.4 million, far less than the 10% increase recorded a year earlier.

Germany ranks 28th out of 31 European countries for the recovery of the aviation sector after the pandemic, with seat capacity at 87% of 2019 levels, compared to a European average of 104%.
