50 million euros for geothermal research - Croatia launches exploration to

Croatia has launched geothermal energy exploration near six cities, with a total budget of 50 million euros.

Geothermal exploration has been included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan as one of the key energy projects. As part of the plan, the Croatian Hydrocarbons Agency was given 50 million euros to conduct geothermal energy research in six cities in the country.

Official sources from the agency said that shallow geothermal waters with a temperature suitable for energy production are Croatia's advantage over other European countries. According to them, the benefit reduces costs and shortens the time of project implementation. This positions Croatia as an attractive destination for geothermal energy development.

Research is being conducted near cities such as Vinkovci, Vukovar, Osijek, Sisak, Zaprešić and Velika Gorica. If the situation produces a positive result, the cities could use thermal energy to heat households, local institutions and companies.

The project is scheduled to be completed in June next year. By then, the energy potential for each location will be determined.

According to the agency, there are currently 12 production areas and 24 exploration areas for geothermal waters in Croatia. Companies established by local authorities control 13 exploration areas, with the priority being the development of geothermal energy for heating. Electricity generation is also planned in six production areas.

The National Energy and Climate Plan sets a target of 68 MW for 2030. However, at the moment, only one geothermal power plant with a capacity of 10 MW is in operation.
