10 billion euros for data centers - Italy doubles investments for the period 2025-2026
Investment in Italy's data centers will double to 10 billion euros in the period 2025-2026, compared to the previous two years. The data comes from a research center at the Polytechnic University of Milan.
However, the country needs to address potential grid bottlenecks and high energy costs to support investment, the report said.
The data center market in Italy is experiencing a strong expansion phase, with the Milan area acting as a driving force and having an annual growth rate significantly higher than that of major European tech cities, such as Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin.
A final figure that confirms the development of this sector is the total energy capacity in data rooms, which has reached 513 megawatts, thanks in particular to the contribution made by the city of Milan.
The Italian government is seeking to attract investment from large technology firms, which are keen to increase their cloud capacity to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence.
Last year, Microsoft announced a plan to invest 4.3 billion euros in Italy to develop its cloud network there. Amazon Web Services also said it would invest 1.2 billion euros over five years.
"The development of increasingly powerful infrastructures raises concerns about their energy supply and the sustainability of the grid in the country," the research center's experts emphasized.
