8.8 magnitude earthquake hits eastern Russia, tsunami warnings issued for Alaska

The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that shook northeastern Russia on Wednesday prompted tsunami warnings in the US states of Alaska and Hawaii, as well as in Japan.

Damage was reported and evacuations were underway in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, which was the epicenter of the earthquake. A tsunami of up to 4 meters was reported in some parts of the region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that waves of 1 to 3 meters above the tide level could rise in some coastal areas of Hawaii, Chile, Japan and the Solomon Islands. In some coastal areas of Russia and Ecuador, waves of more than 3 meters could be expected.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast and said waves of up to 3 meters could reach the coast of northern Japan.

"Urgent action must be taken to protect the safety of life and property," the warning said. The first waves were expected around 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday. The Alaska-based National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska's Aleutian Islands, while parts of the West Coast, including California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii, were also at risk.

In early July, five strong earthquakes were recorded near Kamchatka, with the strongest measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale. The largest quake was 20 kilometers deep and occurred 144 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Kamchatka on November 4, 1952, triggered a 9.1-meter wave in Hawaii, causing damage but no casualties.
