US plans for war in Yemen revealed - Trump administration officials

Senior Trump administration officials mistakenly disclosed war plans in a group message that included a journalist shortly before the United States attacked the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, the White House itself announced.

Democratic lawmakers quickly criticized the misstep, saying it was a violation of U.S. national security and a violation of the law that should be investigated by Congress.

Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg said in a report that he was unexpectedly invited to an encrypted group chat on the messaging app Signal on March 13. In the group, national security adviser Mike Waltz tasked his deputy with building a team to coordinate U.S. action against the Houthi group.

US President Donald Trump launched a sustained campaign of large-scale military strikes against the Yemeni group on March 15 in response to attacks on Red Sea shipping. He has also warned Iran, the group's main backer, that it must immediately end its support for it.

Hours before the start of these strikes, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted operational details about the plan on the messaging group, "including information regarding the targets, the weapons the United States would deploy, and the sequence of strikes."

Accounts that appeared to represent Vice President JD Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and many other important figures were part of the chat group, Goldberg wrote.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he was unaware of the incident. "I don't know anything about it. I'm not a big fan of The Atlantic," Trump said. A White House official later said an investigation was underway and Trump had been briefed on it.
