"Businesses unprepared for energy transition" - American Chamber in Kosovo seeks extension of market liberalization deadline
The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo is calling for a reconsideration of the liberalization of the energy market for 2025. According to it, Kosovo is not yet prepared for this change, while businesses are concerned about increasing costs.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo has urged policymakers to reconsider the liberalization of the electricity market, planned for 2025.
The American Chamber has said that it fully supports an open and competitive energy market, but current conditions show that Kosovo is not yet prepared for this transition.
"Despite the existence of 19 licensed suppliers, only one is currently operational, creating a "de facto" monopoly position that limits competition. Businesses are deeply concerned about rising energy costs, with 80% of companies surveyed expecting significant cost increases. These will directly affect their competitiveness," the official response states.
Furthermore, the American Chamber emphasizes that unlike regional counterparts, Kosovo has not ensured sufficient competition with suppliers before implementing market liberalization, leaving businesses with limited options and increased uncertainty.
Moreover, according to them, the short implementation timeframe, preceded by unclear information campaigns, does not allow businesses to prepare adequately.
"Investment uncertainty is another pressing issue, as 70% of companies fear that rising energy costs will negatively impact their long-term investment and expansion plans. While investing in renewable energy is widely recognized as a potential long-term solution, businesses recognize that such investments take time and cannot be implemented before June 1, 2025," the response states, among other things.
Many businesses report a lack of information regarding available suppliers and the transition process, making it difficult to make informed decisions.
