Trump leaves G7 summit due to intensifying Israel-Iran conflict
US President Donald Trump left the Group of Seven summit, which was being held in a resort town in the Canadian Rockies, due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
World leaders at the summit tried to find a way to contain the five-day conflict, which has claimed the lives of dozens of people across Israel and Iran.
Earlier, Trump had warned that Tehran must dismantle its nuclear program before it was "too late." The US president said Iranian leaders "would like to talk," but they had already had 60 days to reach an agreement on their nuclear ambitions and failed to do so before the Israeli airstrike four days ago. "They have to make a deal," he said.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian leader Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gathered for an informal hour-long meeting immediately after their arrival at the summit.
Merz, speaking to reporters at the summit, said his country is planning to draft a final communication proposal on the conflict, stressing that Iran should not be allowed under any circumstances to acquire nuclear weapons-capable materials.
Trump said Iran "is not winning this war. They need to speak up now before it's too late." The US president was also asked whether Washington would join Israel in its military operation in Iran, but Trump declined to comment on the matter.
The Republican leader also caused controversy at the summit after suggesting that the G7 expand into the G8, including Russia, or even the G9 with China.
He expressed his preference for expanding the organization despite the fact that Russia and China are authoritarian regimes within a group with democratic members.
Trump claimed it was a "very big mistake" to leave Russia in 2014 after it annexed Crimea, a move that preceded the wider invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
