US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement - Guterres: Fossil fuel addiction, "Frankenstein's monster"!
The world's addiction to fossil fuels is a "Frankenstein's monster that spares nothing and no one," UN Secretary-General António Guterres told leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
"Our addiction to fossil fuels is a Frankenstein's monster, sparing nothing and no one. All around us, we see clear signs that the monster has become the master," Guterres said in a speech days after 2024 was revealed to be the hottest year on record and Donald Trump began his second term as US president by withdrawing the country from the Paris climate agreement. The fossil fuel industry gave $75 million to Trump's campaign.
Guterres said that what we are seeing today as rising sea levels, heat waves, floods, storms, droughts and fires are just a preview of the horror movie to come.
He also told the heads of big banks, many of whom withdrew from climate agreements before Trump returned to office, that they were “on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of science and the wrong side of consumers who demand more sustainability, not less.”
He said the same warning applied to “the fossil fuel industry and the advertising, lobbying and PR companies that are helping, encouraging and cleaning up the green.” But he pointed to the “tremendous economic opportunity” of renewable energy, “which will benefit people in every country and make the end of the fossil fuel era inevitable no matter how hard they try to stop it.”
“Thirteen of the world’s largest ports for supertankers will be overwhelmed by rising sea levels. Rising seas, which are caused by rising temperatures. And rising temperatures, which are caused in large part by the burning of fossil fuels.”
Last year was the hottest year on record, with record emissions from burning coal, oil and gas. It was also the first year to exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature increase set as a long-term limit by the Paris Agreement. "That means we have to fight even harder to get back on track," Guterres said.
