"25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico, from February 1st" - Trump

United States President Donald Trump has announced that 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will take effect on February 1. He has also warned of new measures against China, due to shipments of fentanyl.

US President Donald Trump has said he will carry out his threat to hit imports from Canada and Mexico with 25% border taxes, starting February 1. He added that a decision had not yet been made on whether this would include oil from those countries.

The US president said he was planning new tariffs on China, which he said earlier this month would be 10%, but did not provide any additional details.

"I'm also thinking about taking action against China because they are sending fentanyl into our country and because of that, they are causing hundreds of thousands of deaths for us," Trump said.

During the election campaign, Trump threatened to hit Chinese-made products with tariffs of up to 60%, but stopped short of any immediate action on his first day back in the White House and ordered his administration to study the issue.

Earlier this month, a senior Chinese official warned against protectionism as Trump's return to the presidency renews the threat of a trade war between the world's two largest economies. He said the country was seeking a "win-win" resolution to trade tensions and wanted to expand imports.

Canada and Mexico have said they will respond to the U.S. tariffs with their own countermeasures, while also seeking to reassure Washington that they were taking action to address border concerns.
