Tesla sales in "free fall" - Figures in France and Sweden at the

Tesla sales in France and Sweden fell year-on-year for the third consecutive month in March, reflecting the lowest quarterly sales figures in these countries since 2021.

CEO Elon Musk, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has stirred controversy by clashing with far-right parties in Europe, adding to Tesla's slump in sales ahead of the much-anticipated launch of its new Model Y sports car.

Analysts expect data from France, Sweden and other key European markets to provide an important indicator of the group's global shipments in the first quarter, and of consumer sentiment towards the brand.

Tesla sold 3,157 cars in France and 911 in Sweden in March, down 36.83% and 63.9% respectively from a year earlier, official data showed. Its quarterly sales fell to 6,693 in France and 1,929 in Sweden.

The group's market share in France fell to 1.63% in the quarter ending in March and lost ground to brands such as BYD and other Chinese electric car makers, whose total share rose to 3.19%.

Tesla currently faces a number of challenges in Europe. The manufacturer has a smaller and older lineup, while traditional auto rivals and new Chinese entrants are launching new, often cheaper, electric models.

Musk's support for far-right parties in Europe, including Germany's AfD, which came second in February's national elections, also appears to have hurt the company's sales on the Old Continent.

In response to Musk's right-wing activism, Tesla cars have become targets of vandalism in several countries, while "Tesla Takedown" protests are planned across Europe and the United States.

A few days ago, Musk said a fire at a Tesla dealership in Rome that destroyed 17 cars was an act of terrorism, echoing Trump's previous comments.
