US issues instructions to ships in the Strait of Hormuz - "US-flagged ships as far away from Iranian territorial waters as possible"

The United States this week issued new guidelines for commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for oil supplies to the Middle East, as tensions between Washington and Tehran rose over Iran's nuclear program.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration advised U.S.-flagged merchant vessels to stay as far away from Iranian territorial waters as possible and to verbally refuse permission from Iranian forces to board the vessel if requested. "It is recommended that U.S.-flagged merchant vessels transiting these waters remain as far away from Iranian territorial waters as possible without compromising the safety of navigation," according to guidance posted on its website.
She also said crews should not forcibly resist Iranian forces if they board the ship. "If Iranian forces board a U.S.-flagged merchant ship, the crew should not forcibly resist the group boarding it," she said.
Iran's top diplomat said on Friday that nuclear talks with the United States, brokered by Oman, had started well and would continue, in remarks that could help ease concerns that failure to reach a deal could push the Middle East closer to war.
While both sides have shown a willingness to revive diplomacy over Tehran's long-running nuclear dispute with the West, Washington has said it also wants the talks to cover Iran's ballistic missiles, support for armed groups in the region and human rights.
President Donald Trump increased pressure on Iran on Friday with an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on imports from any country that buys goods "directly or indirectly" from Iran, carrying out a threat he made last month.
