Future Innovation: 4G Network in Space - Lunar Ice at the Core Focus of

NASA and phone company Nokia have teamed up to build a mobile network on the Moon, an initiative that aims to lay the foundation for a long-term human presence on other planets.

A SpaceX rocket will launch this year carrying a 4G network to the Moon. It will deploy the system at the Moon’s south pole and then be monitored from our planet.

“The first challenge in getting a network up and running is having a space-qualified mobile device that meets the right size, weight and power requirements, and can be deployed without a technician,” said Walt Engelund, deputy administrator for programs in NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate. “It’s challenging because it will have to operate in the harsh lunar environment with extreme temperatures and radiation,” he added.

The 4G network unit is being built by Bell Labs and Nokia using a wide range of components. It will be loaded onto a lander and, once in place, will be linked via radio to two vehicles that are aiming to find ice.
The transmission of near-real-time images of ice over a cellular network would be the first in the world. Lunar ice could be used to create breathable oxygen, as well as fuel that could be used to power other missions.

Ultimately, the effort will help create a lunar communications network that could give explorers the ability to transmit scientific data, consult with mission control, and talk to their families, as if they were walking down the street with their cell phones.
