Artificial intelligence is disrupting industries from software and law to entertainment and education. Now it's challenging the healthcare sector, as patients turn to AI for advice.

A doctor in Ankara, Turkey, says an 18-year-old patient and his family were recently shocked after the young man was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left leg. They turned to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The platform told them he had only five years to live.

It was wrong: A plastic surgeon successfully removed the tumor in July. “It was essentially cured after the surgery,” the doctor said. When someone is anxious and disoriented, AI simply pulls them into a “tunnel” of information without coherent context.

An OpenAI spokesperson said they have significantly improved the way they handle health questions. ChatGPT is not intended as a replacement for guidance from a medical professional, the company said.

This major development has also built a host of new medical applications for consumers, which are powered by AI, providing fast but unreliable advice to patients.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, these apps do not require certification if they are focused solely on patient education. Many developers have stated that their programs are not diagnostic tools and should not be used as a substitute for professional medical care.
