USA, global leader for "AI" - Passes China for investments in this

The US leads the world in the development of artificial intelligence technology, surpassing China in research and other measures related to artificial intelligence innovation, according to a Stanford University index.

Although there is no surefire way to rank global leadership in this sector, researchers have made an effort by measuring the industry on various dimensions. According to the institute's Global Vibrancy tool, which analyzed 2023 data on the ecosystems of 36 countries, 42 specific indicators were collected to determine which countries are leaders in innovative technology.

The US has consistently held the top spot since 2018 when it overtook China. According to the report, Washington has surpassed Beijing in private investment in artificial intelligence, which reached $67.2 billion in the US last year, compared to $7.8 billion in the Asian country. Not surprisingly, commercial AI powerhouses like Google and Meta, along with upstarts like OpenAI and Anthropic, have produced many models that have influenced the development and application of the technology.

Meanwhile, China has applied for more patents than any other country related to generative artificial intelligence, the UN intellectual property agency said. The Stanford researchers calculated this as a measure of China's strong growth, but not enough to lead the rankings. However, the report says that "China's focus on developing the most advanced artificial intelligence technologies and increasing investment in research and development has positioned it high in the ranking."

In third place we find Great Britain, which has also had a high performance in research, development and educational infrastructure, due to the best computer science universities that create a workforce suitable for technology.

The UK is followed by India, thanks to a "strong research community in the sector", improvements in economic investment and a strong public discourse on social media. The United Arab Emirates ranks one below as one of the top countries for investment in innovative technology. In the top ten we also find France, which ranks sixth, followed by South Korea, Germany, Japan and Singapore.
