US confirms Trump-Xi Jinping meeting - Leaders to meet next week in South Korea

US President Donald Trump will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping next week as part of a trip to Asia, the White House announced, confirming the meeting that had been in doubt following the escalation of trade tensions.
Trump will depart for Malaysia on Friday and will also visit Japan and South Korea, where he will meet with Xi next Thursday, following his speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Executive Directors Summit.
"On Thursday morning, local time, President Trump will hold a bilateral meeting with President Xi of the People's Republic of China, before departing for the United States," the statement said.
A U.S.-China trade war, which had been brewing for months, erupted in October after Beijing significantly expanded restrictions on rare earth exports. Trump threatened tariffs and other retaliatory measures, but has recently expressed optimism about reaching a trade deal with China.
“I think we’re going to have a very good outcome and everybody’s going to be happy,” Trump said of the meeting. He said the first question he would ask the Chinese leader would be about the fentanyl issue.
Washington accuses Beijing of failing to stop the flow of chemicals used to produce fentanyl, one of the leading causes of overdose deaths in the US. For its part, China has defended its position and accused Washington of using the fentanyl issue to politically "blackmail" it.
