Prague bans electric skateboards from January 2026 - Authorities aim to free up public spaces and strengthen security

The Czech capital, Prague, will ban the use of electric scooters from the beginning of next year. City councilors approved a new measure that revises the rules for shared transport and determines where bicycles, both pedal and electric, can be parked. Electric scooters were exempted from these rules, which effectively means banning access starting in January.
“The end of electric scooters has been approved!” explained official transport sources in Prague. “We are introducing clear rules that will free public spaces from their uncontrolled traffic. They were often used as a tourist attraction in the city center and caused chaos on sidewalks and pedestrian areas,” the statement said.
The initiative follows local efforts to limit the number of skateboards roaming around Prague unchecked. Their circulation had already been banned in part of the city center, where residents had raised safety concerns.
Prague joins other European tourist destinations that have tightened regulations on skateboards in recent years. Many cities have imposed strict safety measures, such as helmets and safety guarantees in Italy, or have banned their circulation, such as in Paris and Madrid. While Finland has banned their use by minors under the age of 15.
Prague officials said they acted after complaints from residents about the dangers the scooters posed on sidewalks and parks, or blocking streets and parking spaces when not in use. Authorities, who aim to promote wider use of bicycles, noted that electric scooters have higher accident rates than bicycles.
