The US "arms" Israel - Washington plans to sell weapons worth 8 billion dollars to the eastern ally
The United States plans to sell $8 billion worth of weapons to Israel, continuing support for the ally in the Middle East. Despite international criticism, Washington says it is helping Israel defend itself against militant groups.
President Joe Biden's administration has notified Congress to sell $8 billion worth of weapons to Israel, a US official said.
The deal will need approval by the House of Representatives and the Senate and includes ammunition for fighter jets, attack helicopters, artillery shells and small-diameter bombs.
Protesters have been calling for an arms embargo against Israel for months, but US policy has remained unchanged. In August, the United States approved the sale of $20 billion worth of fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.
The Biden administration says it is helping its ally defend itself against Iranian-backed militant groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
Facing international criticism, Washington has stood by Israel during its assault on Gaza that has displaced almost the entire local population, triggered a famine and raised accusations of genocide.
Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to end the 15-month war that was sparked by an October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian Hamas militants. Washington, Israel's biggest ally, has also vetoed a UN Security Council resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza.
