Rafael Grossi, candidate for UN chief - The Argentine criticizes the organization and reveals his vision

Argentina officially presented Rafael Grossi, the current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as its candidate for UN Secretary-General, with the diplomat sharply criticizing the organization and laying out his vision for transformative change.
Speaking at a ceremony at the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Grossi, a former ambassador to Austria, highlighted his experience in managing complex international crises and called for a more active and practical approach to UN leadership.
"We need a Secretary-General who puts on his boots and goes where the problem is," Grossi said. "We need a Secretary-General who goes and crosses the front lines, even if there is war."
Grossi cited his career at the IAEA, highlighting achievements that included negotiating two ceasefires between Ukraine and Russia to prevent a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and maintaining dialogue with Iran despite threats.
The Argentine diplomat did not hesitate to criticize the current state of the UN, expressing concern about the organization's absence in major global conflicts.
The selection process for a successor to Antonio Guterres, whose term ends on December 31, 2026, began in November 2025. The next secretary-general will take office on January 1, 2027.
