Portugal, “Best Destination in Europe”/ Madeira, Porto and Lisbon,

Portugal has been named the “Best Destination in Europe” at this year’s World Travel Awards. The country reclaimed the title, which it lost to Greece last year, having won the award six times since 2017.

Portugal stood out from a list of candidates that included 12 European territories: Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. This was the 32nd edition of the World Travel Awards, with the awards ceremony taking place in Sardinia, Italy.

Several Portuguese regions were also honored in this edition. Among them were Madeira, which won the title of “Best Tourist Island in Europe”, Porto, which ranked first as an urban destination on the continent, and Lisbon, which was declared the most suitable place for short breaks.

Also in southern Europe, Huesca La Magia in Spain was named the best adventure tourism destination, dethroning the Azores, which won the award last year. Costa Navarino in Greece was nominated as the “place not to be forgotten” for a beach holiday.

The coastal city of Batumi in Georgia was deemed the best place to visit during “all seasons” of the year. Meanwhile, in Croatia, Dubrovnik was once again named the “top cruise destination,” as it was in the previous two editions.

France, meanwhile, won the award for "Best Cultural Destination" in Europe for 2025, while the Greek capital, Athens, was ranked the best city in this category.

The title of "most promising tourist destination" on the continent was awarded to the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Greece.
