Pentagon "embraces" Musk's Grok chatbot - Hegseth: It will help

War Department Secretary Pete Hegseth said Elon Musk's artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, will join Google's AI-powered engine in operation within the Pentagon's network, as part of a broader push to feed more of the military's data into emerging technology.

"Very soon we will have the world's leading artificial intelligence models on every unclassified and classified network across our entire department," Hegseth said in a speech at Musk's spaceflight company, SpaceX, in South Texas.

The announcement comes just days after Grok, which is integrated into X, the social network owned by Musk, drew global backlash and criticism for generating highly sexualized fake images of people without their consent.

Hegseth said Grok will be released to the War Department later this month and announced that it will "make available all the appropriate data" from the military's IT systems for "the exploitation of artificial intelligence."

Hegseth’s aggressive push to embrace the still-evolving technology runs counter to the Biden administration, which, while pushing federal agencies to develop policies and uses for artificial intelligence, has also been wary of misuse. Officials said rules were needed to ensure the technology, which could be used for mass surveillance, cyberattacks or even lethal autonomous devices, was used responsibly.

During his speech, Hegseth spoke about the need to improve and accelerate technological innovation within the military, saying, "We need innovation to come from everywhere and evolve rapidly."

He noted that the Pentagon possesses "combat-proven operational data from two decades of military and intelligence operations."
