New York says "no" to AI in schools - Year-long ban affects about 600,000 students

New York City Public Schools will temporarily ban students up to eighth grade from using generative artificial intelligence tools during the next school year.
The decision, announced by the city's mayor, is considered by authorities to be the most extensive ban of its kind in the United States. The measure affects about 600,000 students and is intended to give institutions time to study how children use technology.
This type of policy will limit the use of about 40 educational AI tools currently used in classrooms. Chatbots that serve as virtual companions will be banned at all levels.
High school students will not be subject to a complete ban. They will be offered courses on artificial intelligence skills and knowledge twice a year, while some of them will be able to use selected platforms under the supervision of teachers.
Teachers will continue to be able to use AI for lesson planning and administrative tasks. New York's plan goes beyond AI and also includes recommended limits on screen time.
For students in grades three through five, a maximum of 30 minutes per day is recommended, while for grades six through eight, the proposed limit is 45 minutes. The city will also conduct a review of educational technology tools, with the goal of eliminating those deemed non-essential to the learning process.
New York isn't the only city imposing restrictions. The Los Angeles school district, the second largest in the US, has temporarily blocked AI-generating tools on students' devices while it drafts a new policy on the use of the technology.
At least 37 US states have already adopted some form of guidance for the use of artificial intelligence in schools. However, in the US there is still no unified national standard for how artificial intelligence should be taught and used in the education system.
