"A trade war serves no one" - Starmer's statement: Calm must be

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has delivered a speech from Downing Street, following threats made over the weekend by Donald Trump. The US president warned of new tariffs on European countries that oppose his plan to buy Greenland, escalating international tensions.

Starmer stressed that the United Kingdom represents values that have been “patiently built over time,” underlining that defending them is vital. He said the United States and the United Kingdom are “close allies and close partners” and that this relationship “has profound meaning.”

The British prime minister declared his determination to keep this relationship "strong, constructive and results-oriented." Starmer said that a close relationship with the United States delivers "tangible results" in the national interest, providing jobs and national security.

The British prime minister added that Greenland's security matters and will become even more important as climate change reshapes the Arctic. "As new maritime corridors open up and strategic competition intensifies, the High North will require greater attention," he said.

Starmer also stressed that there is a principle here that cannot be set aside, because it goes to the core of how sustainable and reliable international cooperation works.

He added that any decision on the future status of Greenland "belongs exclusively to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark." As he emphasized, this right is "fundamental and we support it."

Using tariffs against allies is "completely wrong," Starmer said, stressing that it is "not the right way to resolve disputes within an alliance." According to Starmer, such actions harm British workers, businesses and the British economy. "That is why I am so clear on this issue," Prime Minister Starmer concluded.
