Meta to acquire Chinese startup Manus - Aims to boost advanced artificial

Meta said it would acquire China-based artificial intelligence startup Manus as the tech giant accelerates efforts to integrate advanced artificial intelligence across its platforms. Financial terms of the transaction with Manus were not disclosed, but a source said the deal values the Singapore-based firm at between $2 billion and $3 billion.

Manus went viral earlier this year on X after publishing what he claimed was the world's first general AI agent, capable of making decisions and executing tasks autonomously, with far fewer prompts required than AI chatbots like ChatGPT and DeepSeek.

This prompted commentators to call it China’s next DeepSeek and was welcomed with cheers by Chinese state television. The company moved its headquarters from China to Singapore months later, joining a wave of other Chinese companies that have done so to curb risks from US-China tensions.

The company, whose products are not available in China, claims that the performance of its artificial intelligence agent surpasses that of OpenAI's DeepResearch. It also has a strategic partnership with Alibaba to collaborate on their AI models.

Tech giants like Meta have been ramping up investments in artificial intelligence through strategic acquisitions and talent hires as they face fierce competition in the industry. Earlier this year, the Facebook owner invested in Scale AI in a deal that valued the data-tagging startup at $29 billion.
