China "pave the way" for the cars of the future - The country, a

China has made remarkable progress in autonomous driving and new vehicle technologies, becoming one of the leading countries in setting international industry standards. In early July 2025, Beijing published an international standard for autonomous driving, which outlines the evaluation procedures and testing methods for these systems.

These tests are already underway in a specialized area in Beijing, where citizens can summon a robotic car in just a few minutes. Data collected from tens of thousands of real users in this area is being used to train algorithms and improve the technology's safety.

For many years, the lack of common standards has been a barrier to the development of autonomous vehicles, as road infrastructure varies from country to country. The new standard addresses this problem by creating a clear evaluation process and testing methods that can be applied globally. This is considered a major step forward for autonomous driving, from conceptual design to the development of a baseline of scenarios and the construction of physical test centers.

Beijing currently leads 13 international projects on standards in the field of intelligent vehicle technologies. In addition, in 2022, the country led the adoption of another important standard that for the first time unified data structures for autonomous driving tests on a global scale.

China’s role in this area comes as a result of its extensive international cooperation. It has worked alongside countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan to draft global standards and is developing partnerships with the United States and Southeast Asian countries. This open approach aims to lower trade barriers for Chinese manufacturers and facilitate the export of advanced technologies such as LiDAR, which uses lasers to build models of the environment around a car in real time.

In addition to autonomous driving, China is also advancing the development of international standards for new energy vehicles, such as batteries, fuel cells and battery swapping systems. As the world's largest producer and consumer of such vehicles, Beijing has taken the lead in further developing standards for these technologies. Through these measures, China is transforming itself from a follower to a key contributor in drafting the rules that will shape the future of global transportation.
