Canada "hits" the US / Tariffs of up to 50% on billions of dollars of American goods come into effect
Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on American products, escalating the trade war with the United States.
The measures affect US goods worth 27.6 billion Canadian dollars, or about 17 billion euros. Tariffs of 15%, 25% and up to 50% apply to hundreds of products, including steel, aluminum, furniture, clothing, cosmetics, electronics, agricultural machinery and dairy products.
Ottawa says the measures match "dollar for dollar" and "rate for rate" the U.S. tariffs. The trade clash comes after President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on the same value of Canadian goods in August.
Experts estimate that the Canadian measures are not expected to have a major impact on the US economy as a whole, but some companies and sectors could face significant losses. In Canada, the impact is expected to be strongest in the manufacturing sector.
The clash is also affecting big companies. Trump has threatened Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier with a ban on sales to the US if the company does not move production there.
Meanwhile, trade negotiations between the two countries remain suspended. Canada has also announced a C$7.5 billion aid package for businesses and workers affected by the tariffs.
The clash is particularly important for Canada, as about 70% of its exports go to the US market, while nearly 60% of its imports come from the US.
