India surpasses China in the communications market - Becomes the largest exporter of smartphones to the US
India has overtaken China for the first time as the top smartphone exporter to the US market, according to a report published by research firm Canalys. The data shows that in the second quarter of 2024, 44% of US smartphone imports were Indian-made devices, a huge increase from just 13% in the same period last year. The total volume of smartphones manufactured in India grew by 240% compared to the previous year.
At the same time, China's share of phone exports to the US fell from 61% to 25%, while Vietnam took second place with 30%.
The massive surge in shipments from India was largely driven by Apple's strategy to shift production from China to India, at a time when trade relations between the US and Beijing have been strained by tariffs and political uncertainty. Apple has accelerated plans to produce a significant portion of its iPhones for the US market in India and aims to make about 25% of the company's phones there within a few years.
Trump has threatened Apple with additional tariffs and has demanded that it manufacture iPhones within the U.S. But according to experts, this would be almost impossible, as it would significantly increase prices.
Meanwhile, other tech companies like Samsung and Motorola have also begun shifting their device manufacturing to India, albeit on a more limited scale and at a slower pace than Apple. In addition to the big companies, other global electronics manufacturers have begun investing in factories in India to meet the demands of the US market.
Agilian Technology, based in Guangdong, China, announced that it is renovating a factory in India and plans to start pilot production soon. However, some technical challenges remain, as production efficiency in India and Vietnam is lower compared to that in China.
