Google forced to sell Chrome? - The US Department of Justice accuses him of monopoly
The US Department of Justice is expected to ask a judge to force Alphabet's Google to sell its Chrome search engine after it claims it has been used to maintain an illegal monopoly over internet searches. A federal judge ruled in August that Google had built an illegal monopoly over Internet searches, more than 90% of which are processed through the search engine giant.
If successful, the move would likely be one of the most aggressive moves by the Biden administration against what it claims are Big Tech monopolies.
However, President-elect Donald Trump may have the biggest impact in this case. Trump first said he would prosecute Google for what he perceived to be bias against him, about two months before the presidential election. He changed his "tune" about a month later, asking if it was a good idea to break up the company.
The Justice Department's proposed remedies could have a significant impact on how Americans find information online, while reducing Google's revenue and giving its competitors an opportunity to grow.
In October, the Justice Department said that to address the monopoly it may ask a court to order Google to sell its Chrome search engine and its Android operating system. It could also ask the court to stop Google from paying to have its search engine pre-installed or set by default on new devices or require it to share search data with other competing providers.
Prosecutors also signaled they will try to prevent Google from dominating the growing field of artificial intelligence, potentially barring the company from entering into agreements that limit the access of its artificial intelligence rivals.
Google has made annual payments to Apple and other device makers to ensure that its search engine is the default on smartphones and web browsers to maintain its market share. In 2021, Google paid $26.3 billion.
