Google AI breaks prediction records - Gemini app reaches over 750 million users
Google's parent company, Alphabet, is emerging as a more successful competitor to OpenAI, which holds the status of a leader in artificial intelligence. The progress contradicts statements from investors who thought it was lagging far behind rivals and thus ignored its shares.
Alphabet executives seemed very enthusiastic about the company's exit after publishing the results, the first since it launched the 'Gemini 3' model, which has helped Google be more powerful in the AI race.
The success of Gemini 3 is motivating the company to double its capital spending through 2026 – from $175 billion to $185 billion – as well as massive investments in AI computing capacity. “We are seeing our investments and infrastructure in artificial intelligence drive revenue and growth across the sector,” said CEO Sundar Pichai.
Pichai added that Google's Gemini app, which competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT, surpassed 750 million monthly active users at the end of December. However, that number still ranks it behind ChatGPT, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in October had surpassed 800 million weekly active users.
Google's forecast of increased capital spending initially alarmed investors, sending shares down 6%. But a strong performance from its cloud unit — which boosted revenue by 48% in the final quarter of 2025 — has helped it to recover.
According to experts, Alphabet's amazing result is also guaranteed by the major agreements it has reached throughout 2025 to strengthen products and infrastructure with the help of Meta and Apple.
