EU continues attacks against Big Tech/Imposes fines on Platform X, despite Trump's objections

Europe is continuing its crackdown on big tech companies, imposing fines on Google and Elon Musk's X platform. The EU has also launched new investigations into Meta, emphasizing its sovereign right to enforce European laws despite objections from US President Donald Trump.
Three months after imposing a surprise €2.95 billion fine on Google, the European Commission has imposed a €120 million fine on platform X for violating European Union rules on online content.
The US government has responded by linking the reduction of US tariffs on steel imports to the weakening of European technology regulations, and by ordering diplomats to launch a lobbying campaign against these laws.
At the center of the debate are the Digital Markets Act, which aims to limit the power of tech giants such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Booking.com and ByteDance, as well as the Digital Services Act, which forces large platforms to take more measures against illegal and harmful content.
A senior EU official has dismissed the US criticism. “It is our duty to remind others that we deserve respect. I do not interfere in how they regulate health standards in the US market. But I am responsible for protecting and ensuring the fair functioning of digital markets in Europe,” she said.
Last month, Google proposed changes to make it easier for publishers and advertisers to use its online advertising technology, defying EU regulators' demand that the company sell part of the business to avoid conflicts of interest.
An EU decision on the proposal is expected early next year. Meanwhile, regulators have launched a new investigation into Meta and could order the company to suspend the rollout of new artificial intelligence features on WhatsApp, which the EU says could harm competition.
