EU ends dependence on Russian fossil fuels - Von der Leyen: A new era for Europe begins from 2027

The European Union reached a preliminary agreement to completely eliminate Russian fossil fuels, marking a historic step towards the continent's energy independence from Russia.
According to the European Commission, Russian gas imports have decreased from 45% to 13%, coal imports from 51% to zero, and crude oil imports from 26% to 2%.
“With unity and determination, building on the extraordinary work of the last three years and the REPowerEU plan, we have overcome the worst energy crisis in decades,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting the success of investments in renewable energy and nuclear. According to her, half of the electricity in the EU now comes from green sources.
The head of the Commission stressed that the reduction in Russian imports has significantly reduced the revenues that Moscow uses for the war against Ukraine, from 12 billion euros per month at the beginning of the conflict, to 1.5 billion euros currently, with the aim of reducing it to zero.
Europe has also continued its support for Kiev, sending over 16,000 generators and transformers and exporting more than 2 gigawatts of electricity to stabilize the Ukrainian power grid.
"This is the beginning of a new era for Europe and for our independence from Russian fossil fuels. We will also continue to support immediate needs and help build a more sustainable Ukrainian energy system for the long term," von der Leyen said.
