Trump seeks to renovate Washington Airport - US President criticizes condition of facility, proposes new project

President Donald Trump said his administration intends to rebuild Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, the US capital's main international facility.
The airport, located about 25 miles (40 km) from the US capital and opened in 1962, serves approximately 27 million passengers annually. Trump's motorcade made an unannounced visit to the airport grounds in October to assess upcoming projects.
"We're also going to rebuild Dulles Airport because it's not a good airport. It should be a great airport," Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House.
The Republican president said he has a new project in mind for Dulles. Finnish architect Eero Saarinen designed the airport's terminal building, a distinctive structure with a sloping roof that rises skyward on both sides. The building is considered an important example of mid-century modern architecture.
The airport, a major hub for United Airlines, is operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority under a 50-year contract approved by Congress.
United Airlines said it looks forward to working with Trump and the U.S. Department of Transportation to continue improving airport infrastructure and operations in the most effective and cost-effective way possible.
The airport authority appreciates the administration's interest in making renovations and working together. "We want to build on the existing plan for a $7 billion capital investment for Dulles, which will feature a new terminal expected to be ready next fall," the authority said in a statement.
Several Republicans have introduced legislation in Congress to rename Dulles after Trump. The airport is currently named after John Foster Dulles, who served as U.S. secretary of state under President Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s.
