UN Alarm: Earth on the verge of crossing the 1.5°C threshold - Global

Global temperatures are expected to exceed the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius within a few years, increasing the risk of heat waves, floods, droughts and other extreme weather phenomena. The warning comes from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

According to the new report, exceeding this limit, set as a target in the Paris Agreement, is now considered very likely. Experts emphasize that even if temperatures decrease later, every year above 1.5°C will increase the damage to the environment and society.

UNEP estimates that returning temperatures below 1.5°C is still possible, but “highly uncertain.” Achieving this would require rapid and drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, alongside measures to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The report warns of significant consequences for ecosystems, glaciers and coastal cities, while rising temperatures would also intensify extreme weather conditions.

In the most optimistic scenario, if countries implement all their current climate commitments, global warming could reach a maximum of about 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels.

But the situation is much more worrying if current policies continue. According to UNEP, with the measures in place today, the average global temperature could reach about 2.6°C by 2100.

Removing carbon from the atmosphere, through methods including afforestation and the creation of new forests, can also play an important role. However, the UN stresses that these measures cannot replace strong emissions reductions.

"Every year of delay and every fraction of a degree above 1.5°C increases the risks," warns UNEP, noting that some of the damage could be irreversible, even if temperatures fall in the future.
