2015-2025, the hottest decade in history - Guterres: The state of the global

The last eleven years between 2015 and 2025 have been the hottest since records began, the UN weather agency said. The World Meteorological Organization report said the years 2015-2025 were the 11 hottest years since record-keeping began in 1850. The year 2025 was either the second or third hottest ever recorded, at about 1.43 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.

The massive loss of glaciers from major countries was among the five worst ever recorded, the report said, with extraordinary losses reported in Iceland and North America.

"The state of the global climate is in emergency. Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits. Every key climate indicator is glowing red," said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement.

The report also confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year on record at about 1.55 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.

Governments pledged under the 2015 Paris Agreement to try to avoid exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming, measured as an average temperature over decades compared to pre-industrial temperatures.

"This is a bit of a bleak picture. It is our job to provide the evidence that we are seeing in the hope that this information will encourage people to take action. And we use the information to reinforce the forecasts that we are able to provide and to justify the need for early warning systems so that we can do our best to ameliorate the impacts. But there is still no doubt that these indicators are not moving in a very hopeful direction," said Ko Barrett, Deputy Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization.
