Cyber attack on Japan Airlines - The company announces system intrusion

Japan Airlines announced that it had suffered a cyber attack, warning that there could be delays and flight cancellations could not be ruled out.

"We can confirm that we have suffered a cyber attack and are dealing with the situation," said a spokeswoman for Japan's second-largest carrier.

The company announced that the attack began at 07:24, local time, and affected internal and external IT systems. It had to disable a router that was causing network problems, while it was forced to temporarily suspend ticketing services for its flights today.

The cyber attack adds to a series of similar actions targeting public bodies or large companies in the Asian country. In late 2023, the Japanese space agency announced that it had suffered a cyber attack.

In July of the same year, the port of Nagoya, the largest in the archipelago in terms of traffic, was paralyzed by a virus attributed to the Russophobic group LockBit.

Japan's cyber security agency also suffered a hacking of its systems for a period that may have lasted as long as nine months, Japanese media reported.

In February 2022, the world's largest automaker, Toyota, was forced to suspend all production in the country for a day due to a cyber attack on a supplier.

Most recently, popular Japanese video game site Niconico was forced to temporarily suspend its services in July due to a large-scale cyber attack.

On the other side of the Pacific, earlier this week American Airlines grounded all of its planes for about an hour, disrupting travel for thousands of people on Christmas Eve, due to a technical problem with network equipment.
