USA, Kamala Harris accepts defeat - the Vice President emphasized the commitment to a peaceful transition of power

From Kristi Ceta

US Vice President Kamala Harris vowed to continue fighting for the ideals that fueled her presidential campaign, acknowledging President-elect Donald Trump's victory. She warned that difficult times await the country after the victory of the Republicans.

"While I accept this election, I do not accept the war that fueled this campaign," she told supporters, many of them in tears, at her alma mater Howard University in Washington.

Harris, her voice wavering at times, vowed to continue fighting for women's rights and against gun violence, as well as "for the dignity that all people deserve."

She said she called Trump and congratulated him on his victory in Tuesday's presidential election, promising to commit to a peaceful transfer of power.

"The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, it's not what we fought for, it's not what we voted for, but the light of America's promise will always shine bright," she said.

The somber atmosphere was in stark contrast to the homecoming celebration a few weeks earlier on Howard's campus, when thousands of students gathered before what they hoped would be the first female president elected by the graduates of the Colleges and Universities that have historically belonged to people of color.

"A fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the results. This principle, like any other, distinguishes democracy from monarchy or tyranny, and anyone seeking the public's trust must respect it," Harris said.
